What iron sights can I use with my AR-308 rifles ?
Unfortunately there are only a few manufactures making AR .308 caliber specific iron sights so typically AR15/M4 type combat style iron sights have been used on these rifles and they do a good job. Most AR-308 type rifles will have a flattop Mil-Std Picatinny rail on the upper receiver which makes an ideal platform for attaching a rear iron sight while the position of the front sights will vary. One important consideration in the placement of the front iron sight is the height profile. Some people choose to mount their front iron sight directly to a gas block rail at a lower position than the top rail on the upper receiver. This would require using a front iron sight that is slightly taller than the rear sight so both sights can be on the same height plane. These are traditionally known as gas block sights. The other option is to mount a front iron sight on the forend/handguard that has a top rail attached to it. This requires the use of a front and rear iron sight that are both the exact same height. The front iron sights for this application will typicality be referred to forend/handguard iron sight. The rear sights are almost always available in just one height making it an easy choice. If you decide to go with a flip-up type sight, make sure to choose a sight that has some sort of locking mechanism. Otherwise the sight may flip down each time you fire the rifle as a result of the .308 win mag recoil. Note there are so many specialty sights out there that there will be some variations which we have not covered. These include micro sights and match grade target sights which will have their own unique dimensions and applications.
